Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max could be less than two months away, with new reports pointing to a September 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the company’s first foldable iPhone.
The next-generation flagship is expected to introduce a more efficient 2-nanometre processor, a significantly larger battery, an upgraded camera system and several new colour options. However, Apple has not officially confirmed the handset, its specifications, pricing or release date.
Recent reporting suggests the company may also make an important change to its annual iPhone launch strategy by separating the premium and standard models across two different release periods.
When Could the Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Be Released?
The Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max is currently expected to be announced at Apple’s annual September event.
Reports have identified 8 or 9 September 2026 as possible announcement dates, with 9 September considered a strong possibility. The handset could then become available to purchase from 18 September 2026, although the schedule remains subject to change.
Apple has not issued invitations or publicly announced a September event at the time of writing. The dates are therefore based on reporting, Apple’s historic release patterns and industry expectations rather than an official company statement.

Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max may contain a battery with a capacity of approximately 5,500mAh, with one reported figure placing it at 5,567mAh. If accurate, this would be one of the largest batteries Apple has placed inside an iPhone.
The combination of a larger battery and the more efficient A20 Pro processor could deliver longer everyday battery life, particularly during gaming, video recording, navigation and other intensive activities.
Accommodating the larger battery may make the device slightly thicker and heavier. Reports also indicate that Apple could expand its vapour-chamber cooling system to help control temperatures during demanding workloads.
The Pro Max display is expected to remain at approximately 6.9 inches, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro could retain a 6.3-inch screen.
What Camera Changes Are Expected?
The camera system may receive some of the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s most noticeable upgrades.
Apple is widely reported to be developing a variable-aperture main camera for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Unlike a conventional fixed-aperture smartphone lens, a variable aperture can physically adjust the lens opening to control how much light reaches the sensor.
The technology could improve exposure control, low-light photography and depth-of-field effects. It may also give photographers more control over whether backgrounds appear sharp or naturally blurred.
Supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reportedly claimed that the new variable-aperture lens could cost Apple around 50% more than the equivalent camera component used in existing Pro models.
